Mellow mood

by Genevieve Paiement

Some works of art seem to immediately conjure up a certain type of music, as if an imaginary soundtrack were alluded to in the making of it. Such is the case of Austrian artist Marbod Fritsch's mixed media works. They feel like the pictorial representation of German or Austrian minimal, organic techno or downtempo soundscapes, only it's all about pictorial space play and depth.

On a cardboard background, Fritsch layers geometric forms with blurred or rough edges that bleed into eachother or overlap. The organic textures and patterns within these shapes counter the sprawling, scratched-up, lightly coloured backgrounds. These calming images remain in the realm of intellectual experimentation with forms and pictorial space, but remain accessible and easy on the eyes--much like that Tosca album's effect on your ears. Enter the mellow at 1407 Ste-Alexandre Sept. 5 through October.
