Ecstatically static

Still-life painting tends to recall the proverbial" bowl of fruit and vase of flowers" scene. Although these subjects continue to captivate artists, the genre has come to encompass much, much more, as evidenced by Galerie de Bellefeuille's Contemporary Still Life show. Joan Pujol's hyper-realistic "Newspapers on a Chair" recalls the crumpled newsprint of your average livingroom on the weekend, while Fabian Jean's "Still Life Obscura" manages to make a bronze bowl of oranges very eerie. Rafael Sottolichio's upclose cellophane-on-citrus plays with light, colour and transparency. At 1367 Greene until Aug. 15. Info: 933-4406.
