Street gleaner

by Mark Slutsky

Prolific photographer Jeff Mermelstein's work has appeared everywhere from National Geographic Traveler to Vogue--and now, add the Côte St-Luc Public Library (5851 Cavendish) to that list. SideWalk is an exhibit of Mermelstein's acclaimed "street photography," an artistic genre pioneered by types like Walker Evans (who often hid a camera under his coat) where the photographer takes to the streets and candidly shoots what scenes he or she comes across.

Mermelstein's work is considered somewhat unusual for its rather vibrant use of colour; traditionally, street photography has almost always existed in the domain of black and white. The show consists of 18 photographs, all taken in Mermelstein's hometown of New York City, where he's been shooting on the boulevards on a nearly daily basis for over 15 years. SideWalk will be on display at the library, Aug. 2-Sept. 9.
