Dance proud
by Marites Carino
If you're heading east for pride celebrations, make sure to stop off at the Place Émilie-Gamelin (formerly known as Berri Square) Aug. 1 for the third annual Flexx, a three-hour outdoor dance extravaganza. Organizer Andrea Palmer says this year's edition will be different. "Flexx has opened the doors to different forms of dance. It's a tribute to cultural and social diversity where we're taking people on a journey through many different colours and rhythms."
The marathon multimedia show features African-, Latin- and Asian-inspired pieces, with jugglers, breakdancers and DJs all strutting their stuff during the intermission. The whole shebang ends with a finale featuring La Compagnie Flexx. "This is an amazing opportunity for those people who don't go to the theatre," says Palmer. "You know, dance doesn't have to be this thing that you can't understand." At the corner of Berri and Ste-Catherine, 8 p.m., $2 contribution recommended. Info 285-4011.
