Rebirth of pool
by Genevieve Paiement
What could be more perfectly satisfying than art that's not only intellectually stimulating, but also gets you soaking wet? Local collective SURGE has invented just the thing and called it Sonar (inspired not by Barcelona's electronic music fest, but the crazy submarine technology that measures distance through sound). "You enter the pool and go under the misty water spray and sonar sensors activate sounds, some enigmatic, like children playing in the pool, others dramatic, like thunder," says Lorraine Oades, one third of SURGE. Ana Rewakowicz and Ingrid Bachmann round out the team.
The multimedia installation is set up at the Piscine St-Michel, which was closed to swimmers in '98 but has recently been overrun be a series of art exhibits. "The pool itself is actually quite beautiful, with that large circular window. It's about re-invigorating the site, working with the architecture," Oades explains. The work must be experienced first-hand to get the full, physical effect, though. "It's really an experiential piece," Oades insists. Flip-flops, umbrellas and raincoats are provided for the aquaphobic among us. At 5300 Ste-Dominique, until Aug. 5. Info: 287-9950.
