Pop-mockers Supergirly take the piss out of girl power
by GENEVIEVE PAIEMENT
On the line from London, Louise McClatchy sounds unusually sedate for a super-girly, cheesy celeb-worshipping, over-the-top bimbo. But, wait a minute, maybe that's not her at all. Maybe that's just who she plays on TV. "People expect us to be just as out-there in real life because we have the same names as our characters, Jai and Lou," McClatchy admits. Her dynamic musical comedy duo Supergirly is made up of herself and Jai Simeone. The two Australian twentysomethings have been living in the U.K. for four years now, perfecting their piss-take of popular music icons like Ricky Martin and all the rest.
"Our characters are very ambitious," McClatchy explains. "We both just want to be famous. That's why we hang out at celebrity parties." And like some strange life-imitates-art coincidence, the real-life Lou and Jai are living the dreams of their characters. They even recently landed their own sitcom on British cable. "We've been really lucky, actually. We've done some celebrity parties in London where we performed in front of Madonna and the Spice Girls," she gushes. "They've all got a good sense of humour. Bryan Adams even asked us when we were going to do a song of his. Maybe we'll do the one he does with Mel C.--that's the sort of track we get inspiration from."
And though mocking pop music is territory well covered by '80s icon Weird Al Yankovic, the girlies do it differently. "Yeah, I did like Weird Al and, like him, I change the lyrics to poke fun at the artist or the song," McClatchy admits. "Our show is similar to what he does, but we don't actually dress up like the people we make fun of." The girlies prefer to remain in character--two huffy hussies in sequins and feather boas.
"Jai's character is like that kid at school who would follow along just to be liked. She's more of a bimbo and a ditz, which is quite odd, because she's the dark-haired one," McClatchy muses. "I can be a bimbo, but I'm a lot more conniving, bossy and sarcastic than dumb. We both use our girly charms to get what we want though."
And what they want is to live in the pages of a People or some other supermarket tabloid. "It's all a lot of lies. My character is meant to be dating Robbie Williams and I say we're getting married in September and Olivia Newton John's my mom and Cher's Jai's mom," she giggles.
Just then, a high-pitched bark is heard in the background. "Oh, that's Amy, my shitsu," McClatchy explains. "She's only just joined our show and she plays Heri Halliwell, Geri's dog, who I pretend I'm babysitting. She really does look like her, it's quite funny. She wears little pink wings and she's very girly. She even wears a jogging suit during the aerobics stuff we do."
