JAZZFEST
  • Arkin Allen provides some Turkish delights
  • Affordable highlights at the Jazz Fest
  • Arto Lindsay's Manhattan samba
  • Nu-jazz frontrunners Jazzanova
  • Len Dobbin's FIJM picks
  • Those other jazz fests
  • S.O.U.L.: Survivors
  • Pepe & the Bottle Blondes: Swing may have swung, but there's still some juice to squeeze there, especially when you factor some vibrant Latin pop into the mix. Case in point: this Portland, Oregon act, featuring a 10-piece band, a pair of sassy blondes and Spanish ex-soldier/boxer/actor/ballet dancer Pepe Raphael up front. Blue Dry Light stage (Bleury and Mayor), Fri., June 29, 7:30pm, free.

Sweet Smell of Success: The soundtrack by Chico Hamilton is an extra bonus in this biting 1957 black-comedy film, part of the Ciné-Jazz Soundtrack series. Just watch Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis tear into each other. Cinémathèque québécoise, Fri., June 29, 6:30pm, $4.35.

Si-Sé: The newest kids on David Byrne's Luaka Bop block, this Nuyorican downtempo bunch, focused around singer Carol C. and DJ U.F. Low, promise to make an impact. Blue Dry Light stage, Sat., June 30, 10pm, free.

Antibalas Afro-Beat Orchestra: While they're opening for Femi Kuti on July 2, you can catch these amazing NYC Afro-beat preservationists for free the night before. Un-fucking-missable. Blue Dry Light stage, Sun., July 1, 7:30pm, free.

Jimi Tenor: The eccentric Finnish future-jazzer, the oddball pride of the prestigious Warp label, plays the GM stage (Ste-Catherine and Jeanne-Mance) thrice. First, with his lovely American wife Nicole Willis (Sun., July 1, 9pm), then again on his own, that night at 11pm and July 2 at 9pm. It's all free.

Super Rail Band: All aboard for this legendary Malian band's performance. A quarter-century old, this exciting band, which has included Salif Keita and Mory Kante in their ranks, will get everybody up and going. Blue Dry Light stage, Sat., July 7, 7:30pm, free. :
