Urban dance squad
By Genevieve Paiement
Local folkloric dance company Les Sortilèges was born in '66 and they've been freaking the folk ever since, shining light on traditional, international dance. Au rythme de la ville, their latest production for 12 dancers, continues their trad trajectory, but with a hot urban injection.
"Québécois, Irish, Romanian, Hungarian, gypsy, and just a dash of French dancing are all represented," says artistic director Denise Biggi of the show. "It happens on a Montreal street corner where a québécois man is confronted with all these cultures. In the final scene, everyone is wearing leather pants and they dance a capella to the rhythm of stomping feet and clapping," Biggi explains. "It's a kind of West Side Story of the year 2001." Get caught up in the romance at Théâtre de Verdure in Parc Lafontaine, July 4-5, 8:30 p.m., free.
