Wind power You have to wonder if Bush knows what's going on his own backyard, or at least in the power-strapped West Coast, where some alternative-minded Bonneville Power Administration bureaucrats have given the go-ahead to seven new wind-power projects for the northwestern states. Five wind-powered plants will be built in Washington state and two more will spin out energy in Oregon. The power plants are likely to fill only a small drop in America's energy consumption ocean, providing power to around 270,000 homes, but the effort suggests that some U.S. underlings are slipping out from the slick and oily Bush/Cheney stranglehold.

High rent The great divide gets wider as the fateful July 1 moving day approaches, since now only extreme luck or a healthy wad of cash can secure new digs for desperate Montreal tenants. Add extra baggage like four-legged friends or roving rugrats and the current 1.5 per cent vacancy rate drops down to at least half that. One small tip for the new ranks of homeless folk: there'll be plenty of cardboard boxes lying around after July 1.
