Love and protection

by Genevieve Paiement

Buckle your seat belts, people: in a few days, the wide world of dance will be coming together in an unprecedented way to raise public awareness about AIDS, HIV and their prevention--it's going to be a wild ride. First up, a new two-day event called L'Art de se protéger will be taking place on the Place des Arts' Esplanade (by the fountain). Dance shows, workshops, "living sculptures," workshops, games and other group activities will be playing out June 6-7, noon-8 p.m. Arrive early both days to catch members of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal (12-12:15 p.m.), the Ligue nationale d'improvisation (12:30-2 p.m.) or drop by at 3:30 p.m. for Séro Zéro's Project Re.pairs, an "artistic performance in the fountain."

Then comes what's being billed as the climax of the event: the fifth edition of the D'Amour et de danse benefit show, a smashing smorgasbord of dance featuring over 25 performers. Among them will be Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and the National Ballet of Canada, plus local luminaries O Vertigo, Dominique Laporte, Cirque du Soleil acrobatic duo Oleg and Tatiana and more. At the Théâtre Maisonneuve of the Place des Arts (175 Ste-Catherine W.), June 7, 8 p.m., $35-150. Info: 842-2112.
