Getting the critics' attention
by Amy Barratt
A lot of theatre companies materialize to produce just one play, then disappear. Gravy Bath Productions, which arrived on the scene in the sleepy month of July, could have been one of them. Instead, the West Island-based company has produced four plays in less than a year and is showing no signs of flagging.
On the heels of Christopher Fry's A Phoenix Too Frequent, staged creatively on a shoestring budget, this week sees the opening of Critic, which director Matthew Tiffin describes as a "good-spirited send-up of theatre critics." The work of ridiculously prolific, reclusive young playwright Anthony Kokx, the play takes place in the office of fictional newspaper The Epic and features both a hack actor and an inept theatre critic who probably needs to go back to school. Critic shows at 111 Roy E. (near Coloniale) May 29-June 16, $5-8. Call 920-9183 for reservations.
