Angel >> Animal Rescue Network The no-kill shelter kicked out of Lachine last March will soon be opening its doors near Rosemont metro station in Montreal. The ARN, well known for its exceptional efforts to provide health care and find homes for abandoned animals, is currently looking for donations as well as volunteers who live nearby to help care for the furry orphans. To offer a helping hand or handout, call (450) 681-9646.

Insect >> Toxic waste negligence Government handling of Nova Scotia's Whitney Pier toxic waste site, which environmentalists consider one of the worst in North America, goes beyond mere incompetence. Two years ago local residents asked health officials to investigate possible land contamination after experiencing a litany of unusual diseases and cancers. At the time, officials refused to do the tests or make a link to the nearby tar ponds and coke oven. Now that an acute health risk has been established, with arsenic levels in the neighbourhood measured at 70 times higher than government guidelines, residents have merely been issued a warning to keep their kids from playing outside while suddenly concerned officials conduct even more tests.
