Sweetest tattoo
by Mark Slutsky
Carnie Marnie paints on a lot of unusual things--stools, crosses, toilet seats, tattoo artists' latex-glove boxes--basically, "any object that someone would want me to paint on." A tattoo artist at Tattoomania for two years now, she emblazons said objects with imagery heavily inspired by her trade and by old pin-ups. Cowgirls ride on black horses, guns a-blazing; a toilet seat bears the inscription "Jesus is my co-pilot" on the top and "Satan is my stewardess" on the inside, with accompanying racy illustrations.
Her work has attracted no less a celebrity admirer than Moetley Crüe's Nikki Sixx, whom she met at the South by Southwest festival recently in Texas, and who has placed an order for one of her privy seats. Carnie Marnie's exhibit of embellished objects and canvas paintings, The True 'til Death Principle, shows at Zeke's Gallery (3955 St-Laurent) until May 27.
