Far from the equestrian fields, where as a teen he became interested in veterinarian science, Dr. Michel Gosselin now runs the Montreal Veterinarian Hospital in Westmount, serving most of the island.
Established in the late `50s, this is one of the oldest veterinarian clinics in the city. According to Gosselin, the staff's three guiding principles are: 1) the staff's love of animals; 2) assuring the most up-to-date equipment on the premises; and 3) referrals as often as is necessary, or "knowing our limits." These principles, along with its close community ties, seem to have brought the facility to the top of the Mirror's BOM list.
As for the equipment, Gosselin recalls attempting to monitor a wriggling animal on an IV pump. Gone are those days. While the hospital does have its fair share of equipment, machines such as ultrasound monitors (which are expensive and require specially trained technicians) are not in the hospital. Bringing us back to principle Number 3: referrals to specialists.
His present services aside, Dr. Gosselin was also a pioneer in veterinary dental science. So, any advice for our canine and feline significant others? Brush. Ten seconds a day is enough. A finger brush is best, coated with specially flavoured toothpaste. And trends? Feline and canine geriatrics, especially the former. Cats now are living, on average, six years longer, and both cats and dogs are requiring more medical attention.
