Spring Sculpture
by Sholem Krishtalka
For local art galleries, spring signals the beginning of the end of the gallery season. Come June, most smaller galleries will be off for the summer. Now is a perfect time to enjoy season's-end shows and Galerie Christiane Chassay, now hosting a group show succinctly titled Sculpture, is the best place to start. The show is small (the exhibition space is one large room) but nevertheless wildly imaginative. There is an overarching Dadaist sensibility in the pieces, which range from playful to serious, from classical sculpture to installation.
Stand-outs on the whimsical side of things include Jacek Jarnuszkiewicz's copper and aluminum furniture pieces ("Auto Portrait" and "Corrosion no. 2"), Kim Adams' dioramas "Cheese Truck no 3" and "Slug Tanks no 4," and François Morelli's "Hip Hop." The consistent excellence of the works make this show one of the best around and definitely one of the more memorable of the year. At 358 Sherbrooke E., through May 26.
