Volunteer medics With only basic first-aid training and no war-zone survival experience, these volunteers found themselves running a bona fide MASH unit on the frontlines of the Quebec City protests. Anecdotal evidence suggests that these medics treated hundreds of tear-gas victims, protesters burned by striking gas canisters and hit by rubber bullets, head injuries, fractured bones, not to mention one emergency tracheotomy administered to a protester hit in the Adam's Apple by a rubber bullet.

Crazed cops One of the great transgressions committed by cops at the Summit was the deliberate targeting of volunteer medics and the emergency medical centre. Medics report that they were in constant danger of being hit by gas canisters or rubber bullets, despite wearing jackets emblazoned with a red cross. On Friday night the emergency medical centre came under siege for the first time. Round after round of tear gas was shot so that medics inside the clinic had to use masks to breathe, but the clinic remained open. On Saturday night police launched a full-out attack, shooting tear gas and rubber bullets until they reached the clinic, where witnesses say they drew out medics and patients at gunpoint, forcibly removing all protective gear and confiscating medical supplies.
