Books of love

by Genevieve Paiement

Small presses put out books for the love of it--heaven knows micro-presses aren't in it for the mountains of dough. And to bring together all humble friends of books, the first ever Salon de la bibliophilie goes down this Sunday, April 22, 12-6 p.m. Prizes, a raffle and beautiful books of the last 50 years are just a few of the fun and games at this literary love-in.

Specialized librarians, artists' book publishers, typographers and more are included in the list of invited exhibitors. A group of Montreal artists who are blurring the lines between art, books and comics by creating possibly the cutest ever pocket-sized, foldable serigraph creations will also be representing.

These tiny works, that fasten shut by a snap, have been created by the likes of worldly comix queen Julie Doucet, artists Leyla Majeri, Nadia Uppal, bédéiste Mille Putois and other art- and comic-world innovators. Meet them in real life at the Saint-Sulpice building of the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec (1700 Saint-Denis), for free. Info at www.bibliopolis.net/claq.
