Angel >> Joey Ramone Last Sunday, seminal punk rocker Joey Ramone--of the Ramones, natch--passed away after a bout with lymphatic cancer. He was 49, although fans will agree that he never really stopped being 17. Joey was all about beers, beans, glue, baseball (bats), leather jackets and loud, messy guitars. Along with Johnny, Marky and Dee Dee, the Ramones became synonymous with punk rock, American style. Tall, scrawny, talentless and ugly as sin, Joey still led the faithful, who recognized a true believer when they saw one. Note to his undertaker: Mr. Ramone has specifially requested that he not be buried in a pet sematary.

Insect >> Animal sacrifice R.I.P. to 175 of our furry friends at the Miaouf shelter outside Montreal, who gave their lives last week so that we might be leptospirosis-free. The edict handed down by the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food placed the shelter--celebrated for its no-kill policy--between a rock and a hard place. Though some or even most of the animals might have been saved had the shelter been given more time to come up with alternate solutions, the timeline imposed by the ministry led to the animals' death sentence.
