Son of Streisand!

by MATTHEW HAYS

Children of the rich and famous really can't be considered all that enviable. Yes, they often seem to have no money worries, but the emotional shit they have to deal with can't be considered a plus. Don't take my word for it, just witness the recent Me and My Shadows, the made-for-TV miniseries in which Judy Davis brilliantly brings to life Judy Garland, who was basically a mom from Hell.

Or, hit the Parisien this Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. to see the Montreal premiere of Boys Life 3, the latest anthology of gay-authored fest faves. (The film unreels as part of an Image&Nation Film Fest fundraiser.) Among those screening is the '98 entry Inside Out, by none other than Jason Gould. Yes, the son of gay icon Barbra Streisand and actor Elliott Gould appears in this 27-minute short, which explores the dilemmas faced by the offspring of the notorious.

Sadly, Inside Out can't really be categorized as a complete success. There are a few funny moments, including an hilarious self-help group for kids of the famous. Leading the group, in a cameo which is undoubtedly the film's coup, is none other than Christina Crawford, the adopted daughter of Joan Crawford, whose tell-all pathography Mommie Dearest led to the now-camp-classic Faye Dunaway movie. (The film, ironically enough, ended up bearing little relation to Crawford's book.) Inside Out also includes a cameo by Katie Asner (daughter of Ed). Other than that, though, there ain't a whole lot going on here. Papa Elliott makes a cameo, and the younger Gould has to deal with overzealous paparazzi and a date with a gorgeous guy who turns out not to be interested (cry us a river).

Still, one can't help but feel a bit for Gould, even if his film career isn't off to such an auspicious start. Being Streisand's son has got to do something weird to your self-image, no? After he recently appeared on the cover of the American gay/lesbian biweekly The Advocate, the mag was reportedly besieged by mail, all from Streisand queens dying to date some of her DNA. Beyond dealing with her Empire State Building-sized ego, living as a gay man forever in her shadow has got to be a fucked-up existence.

Inside the Actor's Studio features a guest appearance by Gwyneth Paltrow this Sunday, April 15 at 5p.m. G.P. chats about her most memorable scenes and her preparation for them, among them bits from Bounce and Shakespeare in Love. Best on the box.

Montreal's irreverent, underground celluloid-obsessed cabaret act and moviemaking collective, Automatic Vaudeville, will again be strutting its stuff this Tuesday, April 17 at 9 p.m. at Casa del Popolo (4873 St. Laurent). Music, freakish short films and a raffle for prizes--all for a mere six bucks. Where can you go wrong?
