Dark dancer
by Marites Carino
Tangente's Émergence series exists as a spotlight on young choreographers and this week it's Martin Bélanger's turn to shine. A UQÀM dance graduate, Bélanger has based his latest choreography, L'Ère des ténèbres, on some ancient Hindu writing and a famous Stanley Kubrick film.
This is Bélanger's fifth show at Tangente, one that combines elements of Kubrick's '68 classic sci-fi movie 2001 Space Odyssey, and the Kali-Yuga, a sacred, ancient Hindu scripture.
The scripture says that the world has entered an era of darkness, which will last at least another 432,000 years, and that during this era, people will be attracted to sinful acts. Curious to see how this translates into dance? Find out at Tangente (840 Cherrier E.) tonight (April 5) through to April 7, 8:30 p.m. and April 8, 7:30 p.m., $10-12. Info: 525-1500.
