T.O.'s Freaky Flow from head to toe
by CHRIS HATHERILL
Toronto's Freaky Flow has earned a well-deserved reputation across the continent as one of the most skilled and entertaining drum & bass DJs an audience can witness. Not content with mere beatmatching, Freaky Flow (Steve Grey to anyone who doesn't want to say, "Hey, Freaky!") throws in top-notch scratching while mixing quickly and effortlessly between tracks designed to make you dance instead of scratch your chin. The Mirror dialed a seven-digit number preceded by 416 to ask him about getting dressed and fighting British people.
Mirror: So you're all done with film school, you're signed to Moonshine, you've hooked up a clothing sponsorship-- you're stepping things up a notch.
Freaky Flow: I still haven't gotten to the production I want to get to. That's the next big step, since all the free time I now have has been taken up by the Moonshine project.
M: And what's that mix like? Is there a ton of scratching?
FF: Well, it's never really been a ton of scratching all the way through, but there's enough scratching to keep people happy, I think. It's been a while since I last put out a tape, so it's been fun. Now that CDs are doing well, it's good because it's a more legitimate way of doing things. It ensures the artists get their proper dues.
M: So does this Modrobes sponsorship mean you'll be dressed head-to-toe in Modrobes?
FF: Pretty much, yeah. Whenever we're playing we'll be sporting the gear. It's nice and comfortable, which is always been the most important thing for me.
M: What about underwear?
FF: No, we have to sort that out ourselves.
M: What should people expect from the show? Are you playing around with U.K. garage at all?
FF: I'm sticking with drum & bass and hip hop. Nothing against two-step, but I don't know it that well and haven't heard that much of it.
M: Have you ever thought of battling DJ Hype? You could probably kick his ass.
FF: (shocked) No! I haven't ever thought of battling anyone. I'm not a battle DJ. I don't like to enter into battles and make people stop and watch what we're doing. I'd rather make people dance.
