The Montreal painting scene is picking up momentum, credibility and an interested audience, judging by the group show Ils sont jeunes... et ils peignent on now at Galerie Simon Blais. The show combines the local talents of Peter Hoffer, Dominique Goupil, Mary Hayes, Keer Tanchak, Lenny Piroth-Robert, Yann Leroux and Rafael Sottolichio. Some will recognize Sottolichio's "American Landscape" contributions from his recent show at the Maison de la culture Frontenac, and the works of Hayes, Piroth-Robert, and Tanchak from last year's Paint-or-Die show.
The stand-out highlights of Ils sont jeunes... are Tanchak's two beautiful works: "Inside, After Lancet" and "Outside, After Lancet." Her deftly executed paintings are gorgeous to look at and smartly funny as she manages to simultaneously lampoon and pay homage to the stylistic excesses of the Rococo. Executed on sheet metal, they are the high point of a truly great show. At 4521 Clark, #100, until March 31.
