Talk video

by Genevieve Paiement

Local experimental filmmaker Brian Virostek's installation, Meanwhile, consists of two short film loops. One is pieced together from a trailer for a baseball movie, the other from a documentary about the Oka crisis. The baseball loop seems to be of a complicated play, but no matter how long one stares at it, the outcome of all the ball throwing, running and jumping remains a mystery.

The Oka images are of a man yelling in defiance and a woman turning and walking away from the camera in resignation. These disparate loops echo the collision of community emotions and sports (the slated construction of a golf course) that caused the Oka crisis. Virostek uses this minimal framework to question a variety of both personal and cinematic issues, as well as public responses to film. You can discuss these and more with him yourself--he'll be hanging around the gallery for the duration of the show. For as he says, "When you show your work in a theater, you can't talk to the audience while they're watching your film." At Galerie VOX, 460 Ste-Catherine W., #320, until March 3. Info: 390-0382.
