Artful archetypes

by Siobhàn O'Connor

Working with the archetypes of man, woman and child may not be the most original concept in the world, but for the Paris-based Serge Bontemps, this is just a launch pad for what really gets him going. The self-taught painter is inspired by and concerned with African culture and its popular representation, something that not only affects his subject matter but also colour, composition and material choices.

His newest creation, Mogombi, is made up of three panels, each one based on African proverbs and representing one of said archetypes. Each of these panels is made up of dozens of smaller panels, which when put together, form a patch-work tableau of sizeable proportions.

Part of Vues d'Afrique's Rallye-Expos series, Bontemps' is one of 15 exhibits currently on around town showcasing international artists. The folks at Vues d'Afrique have stretched their tentacles across continents this time, bringing new African- and Creole-influenced art to frost-bitten Montreal.

Those so inclined can raise a glass at the vernissage, Tuesday, Feb. 20, 6 p.m. at the MAI (3680 Jeanne-Mance). The exhibit runs till March 17.
