Ethical civil servants Health Canada scientist Dr. Margaret Haydon just can't stop telling the truth about cows, much to the government's chagrin. Several years ago she and a colleague were taken to task for speaking publicly about departmental pressure to approve a bovine growth hormone that they considered unsafe. Now, her statements condemning Canada's ban on Brazilian beef as "more a political move than a health one," have again led to departmental wrath. Unlike many of her colleagues, the scientist continues to place integrity ahead of livelihood. In the end she may find that the truth does indeed set her free--job free.

Bourque's garden Team Canada's visit to Bourque's infamous Montreal Garden in Shanghai today should strike an ironic chord, but probably won't even sound a weak note. Bourque's $5-million garden, which cost taxpayers $3-million, led to outrage when it was learned that labourers constructing the pavilion were working 12- to 13-hour days, for about $4 a day in "inhuman working and living conditions." The end result appears to be less than impressive, with barely identifiable Canadian vegetation and a multimedia display that has yet to be plugged in.
