Double duty

 The Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery has put up an impressive double-billed show, combining photography and installation under one roof. Observations showcases the work of renowned Canadian artist Charles Gagnon, whose work is largely focused on urban landscapes. He pays a great deal of attention to formal concerns and yet he is deeply evocative, filled with humanity and quiet power. A discussion on Gagnon, led by Dr. Olivier Asselin happens Feb. 15, 11 a.m.

 Laura Vickerson's Trace rounds out the show with an equal amount of understated strength. The Calgary native's installation consists of layers of semi-translucent curtains upon which various photographs are projected. The photos are all silhouettes and are all of everyday objects like kettles, windows or curtains. Because of the ephemeral nature of the installation, the objects take on a delicate otherworldliness.
