Tropical chills
by SCOTT C
Tuesdays at Jaï Bar will never be the same. It seems that since DJ Miguel Graça rolled up in there with his trusty sidekick Mark Macleod for Chill Tuesdays, the vibe has been proper. This relatively new night could may well be the kick in the ass that Tuesday has always needed, with its tropical flows and cheap drinks (!). If you're interested in taking part, but are too skint to pay the tax, you can work it out with Mike at slacker@looksmart.com, or call 284-1114 for more info.
Finally took the time to listen fully to Who's Your Daddy, the new mixed CD by Simahlak, and perhaps the most in-grown example of somebody's true love for the hip hop minority. All right. We all know that Sim can mix, but more importantly, if you are a backpacker, scrub, herb, or God forbid a boo-boo head, you will listen to this who's-who of important and necessary underground classics with drool running down the side of your mouth. You can pick up this unknown delicacy at Science.
Have you heard of the Antibalas Orchestra? Well, you may be hearing from them very soon. The 13-15 piece Afro-funk extravaganza may be coming to a Montreal stage near you before you know it. Based out of New York, and quickly building a reputation for an impossible live show, these guys are all over the world. Often mistaken for old African men on record, this band is made up of young black, white and Latino dudes who know what the hell they're doing. Keep your eyes peeled!
I expect to see everybody with a Masters at Work fixation waiting in line at Sona on Saturday night. H.P.R.I.C Louie Vega will be doin' his thing in the bar, where I'm sure it's gonna be bonkers. Also that night, you can check out the BK Lounge as Brass Knuckles take over Sona's basement for a few hours. I'm told that the guest list is basically non-existent for what will no doubt be a busy night, so if you have any roundabout connections to getting in to this all-nighter, I suggest you call them now.
