>> DJ Freedom doesn't drop C&W dubplates
by COWBOY CHRIS
Amanda LaChapelle first moved to Dallas with plans to stay for a month, relax with her then-boyfriend and play at drum & bass club Decibel. Fourteen months later she's freezing her ass off in Sudbury during her Canadian tour, anxiously waiting to fly back to the Lone-Star state, in which she now permanently resides. The Mirror wanted to pit Toronto against Dallas against Montreal in a three-way battle for urban supremacy, but since she hasn't graced our city yet we'll let the two anglo contenders fight it out.
Mirror: Why did you decide to stay in Dallas?
DJ Freedom: The weather! And the fact that it's so much more relaxed. In Toronto, everyone's so busy working five jobs, running around trying to make ends meet. I hardly ever saw my friends there, since you have no time to chill.
M: You must miss some things, no?
DJF: I miss my friends a lot, and the fact that everyone in Toronto is so knowledgeable about the music. People there know what's up.
M: Anything you don't miss about Toronto?
DJF: The weather definitely. Also, all the politics and competition in the scene. There are so many people who have been doing it so long and that can be annoying sometimes. I don't want to kiss anybody's ass, and once I moved I didn't have to.
M: Who would win in a fight between your average Torontonian and your average Dallas guy?
DJF: Um, Toronto people have a lot of pent-up anger to release, but in Dallas everyone is really big on themselves and overconfident. I'd have to say Dallas.
M: What's bad about Dallas?
DJF: The 115* F weather, which can be nice, but there's so much pollution that it gets to be too much. Everyone drives because the city is so spread out. People don't know what to do when they see me riding my bike, it's strange and new to them.
M: Have you ever seen anyone in cowboy boots at a drum & bass night?
DJF: I'm sure I've seen it at some point.
M: You're working with up-and-coming Dallas producers like Miguel Q and Lutin--is there any crossover happening between country music and drum & bass?
DJF: No.
M: None whatsoever?
DJF: No, none.
