NO means NO
by SCOTT C
By now you've probably seen the video for Montreal's latest major label hip hop signee Ricky J. What!? You haven't? Well, you will, because that little gem of cinematic excellence is in heavy, and I do mean heavy, rotation on both MuchMusic and MusiquePlus. This catchy little dancefloor piece takes place at a roller-skating rink (if you know the location of that place, please get at me) and stars local ladykiller Carl Henry, DJ Majess, a dapper Ricky D sporting an Enyce velour suit that I've seen before, and of course Ricky J. The song, "No Means No," has a non-roller-skating Ricky J chasing all types of serious hotties around the rink trying to kick his game, but apart from the girls, I spent the entire video looking for Ricky D and the crazy antics he gets up to. Oh, that Ricky. You'll be seeing and hearing a lot more from Ricky J, so just settle. And who says he looks like a white LL Cool J?
You can't knock the hustle. That's right, Alex Robbins and the Everyday Hustle massive are at it again, makin' moves to bring only the best in new music to this sometimes-fickle city. DJ/producer/remixer Phil Asher is up to his eyes in international exploits and musical adventures, with labels like BBE, Giant Step and Laws of Motion on his resume. He's also worked with everyone from Jamiroquai to Derrick Carter while building the quiet success of his alter ego, Restless Soul, which is all about those deep, jazzy and soulful vibes swelling perfectly over percussive genius--something we don't see or hear enough of in Montreal these days. If you were at the King Britt show about a month ago, and had an epiphany like I did, you'll probably be mad if you miss this show. Phil Asher is at Blizzarts on Tuesday, Jan. 23, with Chris Pronovost, Troubleman and Simon B. Tix are $8 in advance at DNA, Inbeat, Noize, Tabou, Vice, Arimetik and Rotation, $10 at the door and proceeds go to the McGill Daycare. Phil plays a set from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., so get there early.
Quickly. Chicago deckwrecker DJ Third Rail touches down in the hip hop lounge at Sona on Saturday, Jan. 20, for a Windy-City-style jam. Check www.dj3rdrail.com for more. Local slowpokes Jazz Pharmacy have finally finished their second album and plan to launch it with a show on Feb. 2 at Cabaret. Details to come. Halifax hip hop mogul Buck 65 will be promoting his new release on Anticon Records when he plays at Blizzarts on Friday, Jan. 26. Lastly, myself and fellow Knucklehead Simahlak are playing the basement at Sona Saturday Feb. 3, while MAW man Lil' Louie Vega runs tings upstairs. Brass Knucks at Sona? Who knew... DJ Maxi Pad's Bloody Mess, the farewell concert, goes down at the Grill at Blizzarts on Thursday, Jan. 18. This cannot be missed by anyone with a love for Fonzie, Elvis or crack cocaine. One.
