Come to Daddy!
by SCOTT C
This week marks not only the first Incubator of the year 2001, but also the moment you've all been waiting for. This is the week that we celebrate the birth of Who's Your Daddy?, a new mix CD by the screwface/porno king himself, DJ Simahlak. Anyone who knows this dude like I do will already know that his tastes are impeccable, not settling for anything but the best music. Who's Your Daddy? is more than that, one for the kids if you will, because this mix houses some of the illest, classic, independent hip hop joints that you'll never find anywhere. Special guest appearances include DJ A-Trak, Noreaga, Kingpin Skinny Pimp and Necro, not to mention all kinds of tracks dug up from the "lost but not forgotten" realms. The party happens on Friday, Jan 12, at Blizzarts, with the usual Brass Knucks nerds on the wheels, as well as a few surprises. Check www.sandboxautomatic.com/audioresearch/ for more info on the disc.
Has anybody else seen the latest issue of Fatlace magazine? The British mag, billed as "the magazine for ageing b-boys," is the funniest shit I have ever read that doesn't copy Ego Trip outright. Right in the editorial they claim to be the best hip hop mag in the world right now, and no matter how conceited it sounds, they may be right. There's the piece on crappy graf, the recreation of several classic hip hop album covers using their editorial staff, how to deliver a big baby Jesus in a taxi, an interview with Scoob Lover (one of Big Daddy Kane's dancers), and several hilarious articles by funny guy J-Zone. If you can find this one, pick it up.
Looks like young Alex Robbins is back on his feet once again in the boxing match called "concert and party promotion" in Montreal. The dashing man-about-town introduces the latest incarnation of the wildly successful Next Step called The Blend, this Friday, Jan. 12, at Cabaret. The Scientists of Sound will be there playing hip hop from 1979-2000 on four turntables, with all the money going to CPE McGill (McGill Daycare). Doors are at 11 p.m., and tickets are $8 at the door, $6 in advance at Science.
This Thursday, you should take a minute and check out DJ Spen as he bring the house down at Therapy. The weekly house happening at Jello will be blessed with the Baltimore talent and his slew of goodies tonight, Thursday, Jan 11. Spen is a full-time remixer/producer for Basement Boys Productions, a nationwide mix-show DJ for the Superadio network, and a nightclub DJ worldwide. Also throwing down are the Rurals from the U.K. and Therapy residents Jojoflores and crew, spinning garage, deep house and Afro-Latin rhythms. :
