In the seminal 1990 teen rebellion movie Pump Up the Volume, maverick pirate radio DJ Christian Slater encouraged teens to "eat your cereal with a fork and do your homework in the dark." And now along comes local art upstarts Heavyweight collective, telling us to "Look at the music, listen to the painting," with their Yo Bro installation at Oboro. Whoa! Is this the continuation of some kind of freaky, underground, sense-skewing, youth-culture art revolution? Perhaps.
"It goes beyond live painting, like the way music fills up the room--we're trying to do that visually," Hvw8 co-founder Tyler Gibney explains. "We invited 10 of our friends to come in and basically jam. We've been painting and listening to music at night for a couple of weeks."
So the b-(for busy)boys of art will be melding music, video, painting, collage and cutting-edge atmospherics to overload and confuse your senses. But art collectors be warned: "This is not an exhibit--we painted directly on the walls," says Gibney. "It's not commercial, it's not for sale." At 4001 Berri, #301. Info: 844-3250.
