    >> Art+noise+sleaze=Da Bloody Gashes

    by JOHNSON CUMMINS

You know you've really hit a paydirt interview when you announce to someone, "Congratulations, you have been selected as one of Montreal's noisemakers," and their immediate response is, "Why?"

Well anyhoo, Da Bloody Gashes are probably the most aptly titled noisemakers this year, as their combination of surly improv and snotty punk rock has been turning many heads of late. That and the fact that lead screamer Chloee Lum plays topless à la good ol' Wendy O.

"Sometimes I play topless and sometimes I don't," she says. "If it gets hot it just makes sense. If people come to just see a topless girl then that's fine as long as we get their five dollars. I don't really see it as a real selling point. I'm pretty comfortable topless because I used to be a stripper and I've got big tits, so..."

Being topless, punk, drunk and noisy is always a hotbed for heated incidents, and with a name like Da Bloody Gashes, you know it's just par for the course. "When we played Toronto with Peaches and Corpusse, some longhaired guy said we sucked, so I beat him up until his girlfriend broke it up. But other than that I can't really remember anything, because I'm usually pretty drunk, since we usually only get paid in beer."

Sometime in the new year Da Bloody Gashes plan on recording for the Total Zero label, headed up by Ottawa noise artist Phyecus. As far as the combination of rock 'n' roll and noise goes, Da Bloody Gashes don't seem to be to concerned with confusing anybody. "Some rock 'n' roll people find us too artsy and the artsy people find us too rock 'n' roll, but the shows have so far been pretty good. It's not like we try and create any chaos at the shows, chaos just seems to create itself."
