DJ Mighty Kat ditches her day job
by KRISTA
"Resolutions? Well, for starters, I'm not going to be working in bars anymore unless it's behind the decks," says minimal tech-house DJ Mighty Kat, aka Dominique Thibault.
For the past two years Miss Mighty Kat has been a regular fixture behind the decks as well as behind the bar at Laika. Shortly before Christmas, however, she gave notice that she would be ditching her bartending post in favour of a regular Thursday-night DJ gig at Bar None (formerly Allegra).
"Now that I have more than one regular gig I can afford to not have another job," Mighty Kat says enthusiastically. "And I'll have more time for working on music and playing tunes at home."
Aside from getting more serious about her DJ career, Mighty Kat is also currently working on a top-secret mix CD for a Montreal label, due to hit the streets in early spring. "But I don't want to say which label just yet. I think I should wait until it's closer to production before I let that out."
Like all good DJs she also realizes the importance of getting into a studio and producing some tracks, and so she plans to start familiarizing herself with samplers and effects processors very soon. "I have to get a computer as well but I'm a bit intimidated by all that stuff. I think I need to work with someone who can motivate me and help me along so that I don't get too frustrated trying to figure it all out.
"Other than that, my only New Year's resolution is to try to do a little less drinking. Not that I drink so much, but I was working in a bar!" You can check out Mighty Kat DJing every Tuesday at Laika and every Thursday at Bar None.
