    >> John Britton of StateThis offers fashion help for het men

    by SARAH MUSGRAVE

When John Britton returned to Montreal from Toronto last year, he brought with him two important things. One was a white leather belt and the other was the sad realization that "heterosexual men are fashionably challenged."

A white belt is the riskiest of accessories, so the fact that Britton pulls it off is a testament to his mix 'n' match know-how. "My ultimate wardrobe would be a mixture of Steve McQueen, Sidney Poitier and Mr. Brady, with a few touches of Soul Train," he says.

As for the realization about the homogeneity of het men, it came to him--not surprisingly--while working at the Gap in Hogtown, where he was a top seller. "I always asked to be in the women's section because I got tired of serving men khakis and sweaters," he recalls.

Now this Gazelle percussionist and public service messenger is sharing his good-humoured style sense and more on a new Montreal-centric Web site called StateThis. Founded by sassy sisters Andi and Raluca State, the online mag serves up film, music and lifestyle pieces in a sleek, simple design. Along with lots of easy-on-the-eyes photos, there are regular columns like Stalker's Corner (local celebrity sightings), Fantasize This (erotic imaginings) and StateStyle (where to get cool stuff).

In the premiere issue, John makes his purpose clear: straight men can look good too. I'm sure a lot of ladies will be keeping their eyes peeled for signs that this mission has succeeded. In the meantime, they can get their mates to check out a few helpful hints at www.statethis.com before the end of January, when issue two comes out.
