NYC's DJ Joeski tries stardom on for size
by KRISTA
"Yeah, yeah, for sure! I mean, it's been a really, really good year for me," Brooklyn-based DJ Joeski tells me from somewhere in downtown New York City. He sounds very rushed and excited, and is currently in one of the Big Apple's bazillion running-shoe stores.
"You'll have to excuse me," he breaks off. "I'm trying on trainers--I need some new gear." One of the many perks of being a successful DJ producer is being able to say piss off to the day- job and spend your afternoons shopping before heading off for a little studio session. Joeski is currently enjoying said perks.
"I think this is going to be my year," he says as he leaves the store and heads down a busy street. "I did this record that got picked up by [U.K. label] Shaboom. They are crazy about it. They think it's going to be huge and they're putting a lot of money into it. We're going to do a video and all this crazy press, so I'm pretty happy about that. Then I've got two more Siesta [label] releases over the next two months as well as a big remix for [NYC producer] Sandy Rivera."
Sounds like we'll likely be seeing Joeski's handsome face on the cover of one of London's music mags in the new year. He's running his own label, Maya Recordings, he's flying off to Europe every other week for gigs, and he's working hard in the studio on tracks for a slew of labels as well--when he's not out shopping, that is.
For a guy who only started releasing tunes in the last year or so, Joeski's doing pretty well. And his predilection and prowess for making deep, dark, funky, bass-heavy house hits means he's already built up a pretty loyal following of punters, bedroom mixers and star DJs alike. Besides, everyone already knows who Joeski is from his days as a highly sought-after DJ on the East Coast rave circuit.
"I'm really happy right now," Joeski continues, his voice now barely audible over the noise of ruffling fabric from the jacket he's trying on. "Most of all, I get to DJ so much more now, and DJing has always been my first passion. These days you don't get booked unless you're a producer. Now I'm both."
