    >> The BBCM relaunches its New-Year fête

    by MATTIE H

Montreal's circuit-queen community certainly felt a gap in their social diary last New Year's Eve. After six years of putting on the definitive gay old time, coordinators of the Bal des Boys weekend, the Bad Boy Club of Montreal, said they were taking a year off from the annual event.

"Basically, we were exhausted from holding another record-breaking Black & Blue week in October," explains the BBCM's Caroline Rousse. "We didn't feel at the time that we could really do a thorough job of it. Now we're back, 100 per cent, this year."

To count down to 2001, organizers for the event say the main theme of the evening will be surprise. At key points throughout the night, unexpected gifts will be lavished upon partygoers. "Let me just say, people will be feeling spoiled and loved," says BBCM special events coordinator Kat Coric, who's sworn to secrecy on what precisely those revelations will be. People will have to attend to find out, she explains. And Coric also says the BBCM are particularly excited by the new sponsorship of Le Château, which means the decor of the event will be all the more spectacular.

As usual, the BBCM has rounded up a winning ensemble of DJs to ring in the next 365 days. "We're super happy with our lineup this year," says Rousse. "The names are impressive and their sounds will prove even better than anyone will expect, I'm sure." Names include DJ Davey Gold, the New Yorker notorious for his work with Strictly Rhythm. Spinning for the home team will be DJ Mat Ste-Marie, who headlined for the closing party of October's Black & Blue. DJ Rob DiStefano will also tune in for one of the main event's pre-parties, It's Not Over (which, undoubtedly, will live up to its title). DiStefano is famous for founding Twisted, one of the most celebrated house labels.

Rousse urges revellers to take in more than one or two of the events planned for the weekend. As usual, the BBCM's organizers have planned for an excess of partying, with soirées, cocktails and the main event running from Thursday, Dec. 28 right through to recovery parties on Monday, New Year's Day.

The Bal des Boys weekend runs Dec. 28-Jan. 1. Tickets range from $3-$45, depending on the event. VIP pass $120. Info: 875-7026 or www.bbcm.org
