Snowfall=club crawl
by SCOTT C
After e-mailing a series of "happy holiday" expletives and other swear words to a friend who just happens to be lounging on a beach somewhere in Thailand, I put on the boots, dug out the gloves, secured the layers, and made the treacherous journey to the corner for some "holiday" Heineken. Instant winter, folks. For those of you who thought you were getting off easy with some preschooler flurries, think again. Just like the salt stains on your boots that weren't there when you went to bed, the "holiday" magic has occurred overnight. Now, you can call me an unobservant, fact-manufacturing "holiday" fool, but my experience in the city of Montreal has taught me that after the first big snowfall (or when we're this close to the holidays), people come alive. All of the sudden, everybody wants to go out. It's like nobody cares if the car is buried and it's 17 below out because two feet of snow on the ground means the club will be packed. Just watch and see if wherever you happen to be isn't curiously packed, and yeah, happy holidays...
Gotta mention the Swollen Members show that happened last Tuesday at Tokyo. Prev One and mini-dude Madchild were lucky enough to have a packed house to vibe with, even if the sound was questionable. Mr. Brady opened the show with a forgettable, weed-induced set of two and a half songs, while Moka Only impressed many with his stage presence and newfound love of singing choruses in every single one of his songs. All in all, the Battle Axe crew put on a proper show for the enthusiastic crowd. My advice to Tokyo is if they plan to continue hosting obviously successful live shows like this, they should probably upgrade the sound system for 2001.
Wanna battle? Well, I'm not sure of the format for the upcoming Tag Team 1, but if I had an event with a wrestling reference for a name, I would assume people would figure it out. On Friday, Dec. 15, the mighty Shades of Culture, Divizion Blindée, Parasight (SP/Manspino), Chance Won, DJ Wreck and guests, enter the stage for the first instalment of what will hopefully be a regular occurrence. The whole thing goes down at Salle L'X, 182 Ste-Catherine E., at 8 p.m. and the tax is $7.
It seems the American-owned club franchise that they said would never work in Montreal has turned a year old. That's right, Polly Esther's has reached the ripe old age of one, out-clubbing even the now-vacant China just up the block. To celebrate, the Culture Club night is hosting an open bar from 10 p.m. to midnight with free buffet before midnight and prize giveaways. This all goes down on Saturday, Dec. 16, and still features the deck styles of Eddie Lewis, DJ Jinx, DJ Soul, Puppa Sacha and of course, George Micheals. You can get more info on the night at www.pollyesthers.com.
