Wayward weather
by SHOLEM KRISHTALKA
All Montrealers have an intimate relationship with bad weather. So everyone should be able to relate to Anne Ashton and Laura Millard's show Turbulence on now at the Maison de la culture Côte-des-Neiges. Ashton's paintings deal with the phenomenon of tornadoes, as objects at once beautiful and terrifying. Her crisp illustrative style, flat, slickly painted surfaces and the thick black frame that surrounds each work give the paintings a clinical distance, situating them somewhere between the documentation of a disaster and its terrible reality. Millard's mostly monochromatic works, with their abstractly decorative style, reference the random patterns of snow. 'Tis the season... At 5290 Côte-des-neiges until Jan. 7.
