Battle Axe warriors
by SCOTT C
Biting at the heels of yet another cancelled hip hop occurrence in Montreal (Afu Ra/MOP) comes the Swollen Members gig at Tokyo on Tuesday, Dec.12. The Vancouver duo of Madchild and Prevail have been doing their darndest to maintain a steady flow of singles, a feat that has established a new standard for underground hip hop coming out of the West. These dudes will be rolling with Battle Axe labelmates Mr. Brady and one of my favourite MCs, Moka Only. They'll also be joined by Sunspot Jones from the Living Legends, one of the many stateside crews also known to hang with the gang. Residents Buck Rogers, Future Lad, Density, Steady B and D.R. One will be in the house as usual. Tickets are $9 is advance from DNA Records or the Vice store, or you can pay $13 at the door on the night of the show.
Never let it be said that you can predict what the contents of this little corner of the paper will include. Last week, my friend Jackie had her dog stolen from outside the Alexis Nihon Mall, and has been desperately trying to find the lost pup. Snail is a medium-sized mixed-breed, with brown and black colouring and a very friendly personality. She was taken from outside the mall on Friday, Dec. 1, at about 4 p.m., and was wearing a red collar with Ottawa tags. If you have a dog, you probably understand. If you don't have a dog, but know something about Snail's whereabouts, there's a $500 reward waiting for you. You can get in touch with Jackie at 273-7490.
Coming up at Tokyo on Wednesday, Dec. 20, is the arrival of Philly soul provider King Britt. The accomplished producer, musician, music lover and DJ will roll into town for a long overdue set on the Main that should be a party and a half. I also have the pleasure of being on the bill that night, joined by my fellow Knuckle, Simon B. We aim to please.
Those of you rushing out to grab a copy of the new Lyricists Lounge Vol. 2 on Rawkus might not even know about the Montreal connection with the long-awaited release. The new comp, which features Mos Def, Q-Tip, Royce Da 5'9", Dilated Peoples, Redman and new DefJam signee Saukrates, also features a cover designed by our own Willo Perron. Willo, the Hugh Hefner of the design world, recently took his eye for detail to NYC to handle art direction for Rawkus, so keep your eye out in the future.
Those of you used to complaining about the cover at Sona and how it doesn't always equate with what you find inside will be happy about this late-breaking news. Apparently "big boy" Danny Tenaglia and DJ Laflèche will be playing the Sona bar on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 9 p.m. and their adoring fans will pay absolutely nothing at the door. Who says clubland has no holiday spirit?
