Metropolis on the move

The Canadian Centre for Architecture is a unique entity; their exhibits explore the history, theory and shape of the city in a fashion both academic and accessible. The CCA's latest, Cities in Motion, is an examination of urban systems of transportation, and the sometimes-violent effect they can have on the cityscape. The exhibit is divided into three sections: "Montréal Mobile" presents a history of the island's bridges, expressways and metros; "Toys and Transport" shows--through children's playthings, pamphlets and other ephemera--changing public attitudes to modernization; and "New York: CCA Competition for the Design of Cities" exhibits the finalists in the CCA's challenge to design new models for Manhattan's industrial West Side. In addition to the illustrations, photos and other objects composing the exhibits, the CCA will screen relevant films by Lars von Trier, Wim Wenders and others. The exhibit runs until April 1; check repertory listings weekly for film info.
