The Big/Mack connection
by SCOTT C
All of you serious Biggie Smalls fans should cover your ears. Stories have been circulating for weeks on the Internet regarding the lyrics for the deceased rapper's now-classic debut, Ready to Die. Apparently, Bad Boy Puffy Coombs hired Craig Mack (who did "Flava in Ya Ear" and is easily the ugliest living man in creation) to write the lyrics for Ready to Die in exchange for an undisclosed amount of money. When things started to go well for Biggie after the album's release, Mack threatened to go public with the news unless Puffy compensated him properly. This is how Craig Mack, world's ugliest man and less-than-mediocre rapper, came to release Project Funk the World, a classic stinker if I ever heard one. Which raises the question: if Mack wrote the rich lyrical bounty of Ready to Die, where is the retarded pinhead that wrote rhymes for Mack?
But is it true? Of course it is! I got it off the Net!
Oh Inobe, Inobe, Inobe... Truth be told, promoter and creative inspiration Inobe Stanislaus would love to see his name in the papers every week, if he could. This week it's here, and rightfully so. Inobe's Coco Café is a showcase for black talent happening every month at Jello, falling mostly along the lines of spoken word and musical performances. This Sunday, Nov. 26, is dedicated to the ladies. Fierce Females will be hosted by the lovely Mahalia Verna and feature performances by women like Kween, Maxine Roberts, Robin Buttaphly, Ophelia Calandar and many more. Musical selections will be provided by DJ Misayo and DJ Trinity, while you can get all the love and welcoming words you need from Inobe himself. Doors are at 9 p.m.
If you've got a minute, you can light a candle for Fred Warren, aka Nice Fred. No, he hasn't passed on, but he is moving to Hollywood, California. Fred has been a big part of the Nice Distribution team over the years, making sure vinyl addicts in Montreal got their hands on the new shit form abroad and beyond in the nick of time. This Saturday, Nov. 25, he'll be playing his final Montreal gig at Unity from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., and then it's "California here I come!"
New on the block is Reel, happening at Luba Lounge every Tuesday night. DJs Dubline and Mark Willet (aka Willnot, Willie-T, Skillet) are basically trying their best to keep you in your seat with all the downtempo, dub, funk and chilled-out rhythms you can handle. So relax.
