Cold war heats up!
by CHRIS HATHERILL
With air temperatures dropping rapidly, the war between going out and staying home is heating up. The past few weeks have seen heavy fighting between the forces of soup, blankets and Blockbuster on one side and an army of determined promoters on the other. At this point, their mission to get us out every single night seems to be succeeding, thanks to some freshly breaked nights and a steady bombardment of out-of-towners.
If you missed Thievery Corporation but still really want to see two guys from D.C. who make amazing beats, make your way to Stereo on Friday, Nov. 24, for Deep Dish. The masterminds behind Yoshitoshi Records have residencies everywhere from the American capital to London, Frisco and the Big Apple--so don't make Montreal look bad by not going!
Terry Francis will be rocking Sona in a U.K. tech-house mafia style on Saturday, Nov. 25. The same night, Philgood and friends will be at the beautiful Studio Orange for L'...veil, an all-nighter whose info-line is 720-9410.
After a quick round of musical chairs with the Dune boys, the Hardsteppers are back in business at Blue Dog on Wednesday nights with Broken. The BPM count is a little lower than their previous Thursday night slot at Angel's, with breaks and U.K. garage replacing drum & bass as the weapons of choice. Also expect a fair amount of booty bass, since Sase One is involved.
If you're craving more of that two-step flavour, keep your eye on Jai, where a garage night is in the works. And speaking of Jai and DJ Uzi and all that, fly girls might want to swing by on Friday, Nov. 24, for a special Luscious clothing party where secret spy maps to the Luscious warehouse sale will be given out.
Another crew hard at work against hibernation is that crazy gang from Rotation. DJ Gary Troubleman and DJon have all but taken over Pub Quartier Latin for Are You Ready! Saturdays and Moutarde Forte Wednesdays.
If you like really good house and don't mind Torontonians, Jello Bar is the place to find yourself at next Thursday, Nov. 30. Nick Holder will be up inside the place showing us why his brand of tasteful, minimal house has brought him global acclaim. One more big visitor to tell you about: the Orb's Alex Paterson will be at Delerium 3 alongside Juno Reactor. Info on that one is at 204-4666. And while we're on a trancey topic, DJ Neerav's Trance 5000 zine is back in full effect, so pick it up picky!
Gossip department: Montreal almost lost half its drum & bass arsenal when Double A and Maues got caught up in an armed restaurant robbery while in L.A.! Luckily they're back safe and sound, rinsing out the Session at Jingxi, Basics at Angel's, Massive Saturdays at Blizzarts and God knows where else.
Stay warm! robodisko@hotmail.com.
