Drawings of perception
by SHOLEM KRISHTALKA
It's hard to deal with things like reality and perception in the visual arts without being overbearing. There are, however, artists who are able to take such subjects and fire off a bull's eye or two, as attested to by Sondes, an exhibition of paintings at the Maison de la culture Frontenac. The three painters involved, Martin Bureau, Phil Irish and Rafael Sottolichio, each take their subjects from different angles.
Bureau's enormous paintings explore the relationship between mass media, technology and nature. Irish's multi-panelled works make use of the visual deconstruction of apparently idyllic scenes involving sailboats, surfboards and life-jackets. Sottolichio uses images of blurry highway landscapes, highlighting the anonymity of these sites by numbering his paintings instead of naming them. The fact that these three are expert drawers and painters doesn't hurt either. At 2550 Ontario E., until Jan. 14.
