If you're in the mood to see a large dance ensemble this week, you're in luck: the legendary American choreographer Paul Taylor is bringing his 45-year-old company to town. They will be performing three works, which were all choreographed by Taylor. First comes Cascade, which was inspired by and set to Concertos for Piano and Orchestra, by J.S. Bach.
Then there's Syzygy, an energetic piece with a mysterious title that requires a dictionary ("The conjunction or opposition of two heavenly bodies," according to Webster's). It plays with the theme of opposing forces and features frenetic movements that screech to a halt. And to end off the evening there's Piazzolla Caldera, which, like Vancouver's Holy Body Tattoo's work, takes the sultry moves of the tango and puts a spin on the traditional Argentinean dance form. Also, you might want to show up early: there's a talk in the lobby an hour before show-time.
The Best of Paul Taylor, Nov 23-25 in Place des Arts' Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier (175 Ste-Catherine W.), 8 p.m., $20-56. Info: 844-2112.
