Steal your own show?
by SCOTT C
You can stop with the blah-blah about Thievery Corporation, and the silly little story that their show's been cancelled. Somebody even said to me last week that they had quit DJing at all because of the stress. Have you seen these two slicksters? "Fashion + music + attitude + style" is their motto, not "Fashion + music + attitude = stress." Anyway, they're not cancelled, and you can check them outSaturday, Nov. 18 at Club Soda for a $25 tax.
Looks like Ricky and Perry are trying to do one for the thugs, as they bring the explosive M.O.P. to Montreal for a show with Afu-Ra. This of course raises the question of DJ Premier. The producer with royalty status in the world of hip hop just so happens to be executive producer of both of these artists' latest records. Does that in fact mean that he'll be in attendance for the Dec. 2 show at Rainbow-Ites? Who knows, but even if he doesn't show up, Afu might have some tricks up his sleeve. Getting the self-proclaimed "Firing Squad" of Billy Danzini and Fizzy Womack across the border should be no problem, now that they have a decent-selling record with Warriors. I'm sure all the hip crossing guards are down with the Mash Out Posse. Rap duuudes! Tickets are $17.50 and available at Off the Hook stores around Montreal.
Our buddies on the West Coast, Swollen Members, will be back in town on Dec. 12 for a show at Tokyo. The Vancouver hip hop duo has been steadily pumping out the singles on their label Battle Axe for a good while now, something that has their music stuck in the heads of many. Recent collabos include stuff with Son Doobie, Buck Fifty, LMNO, Madlib and regular gigs with the Alchemist. Vancouver son Moka Only will also be making the trip, I'm told, rounding out the possibilities of an all-around ill night.
There's more, too! The French heavyweight duo Faf La Rage and Shurik'n return to Montreal to rock the basement at Sona on Friday, Nov. 17. It's been a little while since these two have been to town, but their fans run deep and for good reason. Opening up the show is hometown crew Les Architects, an outfit that needs no introduction in this city (whatup Ray! Jim!). The show starts at midnight and admission is the regular $20 float.
Can't forget about Ron Trent. The Chicago-born, New-York-based DJ is coming to Therapy at Jello tonight, Thursday, Nov. 16, with something for all the kids. Trent is currently holding down a residency at Giant Step in NYC playing Mondays every week, but has worked the production angle for years alongside names like Groove Collective, Tony Allen, 4Hero and Inner City. Last week at Therapy was a proper party, and this should be more of the same. Doors are at 9 p.m. and guest list info at 740-0002. Don't forget, Toronto house export Nick Holder will be at Therapy on Nov. 30.
