Got a brother on the run...
by SCOTT C
Here's one for the heads. I was checking my messages on Sunday night when I almost pissed my pants reacting to a tidbit that had been left on the machine. My partner Simon's gravely voice explained that he had just seen Chi Ali on America's Most Wanted, and that he was being sought for murder. For those of you who don't know, Chi Ali was best known for his collaborations with Black Sheep, and as the youngest member of the Native Tongues Family (De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah). Back in '92, at 14 years old, he released The Fabulous Chi Ali, a record that only produced two hits but was almost entirely produced by the then-unknown Beatnuts. Chi Ali Griffith apparently shot his girlfriend's brother over a $300 debt and some stolen CDs, and the now-23-year-old has been on the lam ever since. There's a song off his album called "Chi the Maniac Psycho" that I'm sure is getting a lot of play in his hometown of NYC right now. Stay up, kid.
Speaking of talented young'uns doing incredible things, we can't forget Montreal's IDM/electronic wunderkind Mitchell Akiyama. His label Intr_version is releasing their first compilation with naive assurance that their causes were wrong inflicted (I guess that's why it's called intelligent dance music?) this week. The launch for this album will be at Noize on Friday, Nov. 10 at 9 p.m., and will feature performances by Deadbeat, Jetone, Mateo Murphy, Pheek and of course Mitchell. For more info call 845-9537.
Following the surefire sellout team-up of Limp Bizkit and our favourite mad rapper Eminem, the Molson Centre will once again be hosting the rock/rap thing on Dec. 20. Get ready for the Offspring, MXPX and good ol' Cypress Hill for an evening of weed smoking and plain old jumping around.
You can thank our man Victor for bringing back Toshio of United Future Organization for a DJ set at Jingxi on Saturday, Nov. 11. A few of you were griping at the lack of ambiance at their Jazz Fest gig earlier this summer at Club Soda, so it's off to a real club setting we go.
Lastly, if you're one of the many riding the neo-Brazilian wave, you absolutely cannot miss Bebel Gilberto as she returns to Montreal on Saturday, Nov. 25 for a show at the Spectrum. This girl has a gorgeous voice and a sick band--what more do you need?
