Jingxi turns two years old
by CHRIS HATHERILL
As dance music giants like Ninja Tune and Talkin' Loud celebrate 10 years in the game, Jingxi is gearing up for a massive blowout to mark, um, two years of existence. Though it may not be an anniversary of epic proportions, the scale of FEED (as they're calling the soon-to-be annual event) shows the club's pretty grown up for a two year old.
For starters, there's Toshio Matsuura, one third of Japanese trio United Future Organization. Matsuura and his partners were fabricating funky jazz beats and breaks way back when it was still called "acid jazz" and every album cover featured tacky tribal guys dancing around. On his own, Matsuura delivers a mix of spy-style outer space beats and sophisticated future jazz, leading the always-reliable Tokyo Rockin' magazine to call him "Tokyo's most coolest DJ." Matsuura spins Saturday, Nov. 11. Doors open at 10 p.m. (as they do for all FEED nights) and you have to pay $10 to go through them.
After a few days off to recover, FEED officially kicks off on Tuesday, Nov. 14 with the one and only DJ Ram. To make sure you're in the right mood for his all-over-the-road mix of breaks, beats and whatever else crawls into his record box, the bars are in "open-bar" mode from 10 p.m. to midnight. Cover is $8.
On Wednesday, Nov. 15, Double A & Twist and Jordan Dare bring you a session of Absolut Drum & Bass that promises to be a little more dub-platey than usual, matey. Thanks to a recent visit by D&B fairy DJ Storm, expect to hear a couple of tunes from a genre called "unreleased." Cover is $5 and drink specials are in full effect.
Thursday, Nov. 16, sees the triumphant return of Fred Everything, who recently rocked Fabric, arguably the best club in London right now. If you haven't seen him recently, come hop on the "I never bothered before but now that he's played in Europe he's good enough for me" bandwagon and see what you're missing. The cover is $6 and females drink free before midnight.
Miss Honey Dijon blesses the decks on Friday, Nov. 17, with her unrelenting mix of deep house, techno, tribal beats and disco loops, so get your wigs, handbags and high heels ready. Joining her are local heroes Alain Vinet and DJ Jester, so you know it'll end in debauchery and mayhem. Cover is $10, things get going at 10 p.m. and, like most of the FEED nights, there will be specials at the bar.
If you're still alive on Saturday night, drag yourself back for the legendary DJ Joeski, a long-time fixture on the New York house scene. Having played at legendary spots like NASA, Joeski knows what makes a crowd bump and, alongside Nic B and Phil Larochelle, promises to keep it live until the wee hours. Cover for Nov. 18 is $10.
Sunday, Nov. 19, will be a contender for show of the year, with Layo & Bushwacka! teaming up with Krista for only $5! The U.K. breaks duo had to cancel last time due to a last-minute peanut-allergy situation, but are in good health now and are a must-see if you're into tech-housey nu-school breaks. In addition, the 9-11 p.m. open bar should turn things up a notch. Doors are at 9 p.m. on this night. Do not miss this show and, please, do not bring nuts.
