Okay... play already
by SCOTT C
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm almost ready to buy my tickets for the Okay Player Tour. The only problem is this. On the Okay Player web site (www.okayplayer.com) they post all the stops for the big show that features the Roots, Dead Prez, Common, Slum Village and more, including a Sunday, Nov. 26 date at Metropolis right here in Montreal. But if you're real clever like me, bypassing all the hollow tip-offs from promoters and sidestepping the hype game, you call the Metropolis upcoming event hotline (844-3500). Here a nice recording tells you about the upcoming Jean Leloup and King Crimson shows, but no mention of the Okay Player Tour. Oversight, or hidden truth? At any rate, if you're truly up for a great show you may want to spring for tickets for the confirmed Tuesday, Nov. 21 Okay Player stop in T.O. at the Warehouse, but don't stop praying for a miracle.
Think the gap between English and French hip hop in Montreal is bigger than the Grand Canyon? You should check out the latest two-volume mixtape extravaganza concocted by our own DJ Wreck. Wreckonize/Wreckonait are two extremely well-put-together tapes, one concentrating on all the anglo crews bumping around town, and the other a who's-who of Franco-spitkickers you may or may not know. Apart from being well mixed, Wreck is a more than capable turntablist who blends his own skills with recorded tracks of Montreal artists, and all kinds of freestyles and exclusives. The English tape has cameos from heads like Chance Won, Manchilde, Ziplok, Madhi, Obscure Disorder, Manspino and Bless, while the French tape features J-Kill, Muzion, Division Blindee, Traumaturges, Yvon Krevé, Sans Pression, M.G.M., and my favorite V-Da. You can grab your copy at Science.
As I told you last week, Jojo Flores is pulling out all the stops for his birthday party at Jello on Thursday, Nov. 9 with special guests Kenny Bobien and Jerome Sydenham. On Thursday, Nov. 16, garage king Ron Trent steps down off of his throne at Giant Step in NYC to touch down in MTL for one night. This is the party you should try hard to get into because you won't ever want to leave. Don't forget. All of you people who consider yourselves V.I.P. can get in touch with Jojo or Inobe for the guestlist lowdown at 740-0002.
Friday Nov. 3 Nav and Patrick Dream run the decks at Stereo for the "Best of Montreal" weekend that also includes the international stylings of Mark Anthony playing on Saturday, Nov. 4. This dude has been travelling a lot recently and I'm sure he's brought back some treats for the masses. Doors are at 2 a.m., $20.
