Beautiful nightmare

by GENEVIEVE PAIEMENT

Once in a blue moon, a fantastical dream or piece of art will send shivers up your spine, imprinting itself in your memory like a ghost. Such is the effect of local artist Sophie Jodouin's paintings. Working in numbered series, her subjects range from eerie, doll-like children's busts ( "Collected Children") to a wandering, dancing, phantom-like girl in a white dress ("Between Yesterday and Tomorrow" and "Don't Fade Away").

The works portray apparitions, smudged hallucinations existing in a world of their own, where death and silence cloak a richness of secrets and emotion. Each piece is an enthralling, mute story, a mystery. Like in the "Floating Head Series," is that dripping paint or blood oozing from their necks? Whereas in the "At the Edge of Appearances," we see the smudges of blood all-too-clearly, obscuring the outlined bodies of the heads with closed eyes. See for yourself at Galerie de Bellefeuille (1367 Greene) Nov. 4-16, vernissage Nov. 5, 1-5 p.m. Info: 933-4406.
