Drum & bass darling DJ Storm is coming to your town
by KRISTA
"I'm really looking forward to the Montreal part of my trip, it's been so long since I've seen you all!" says an excited DJ Storm, calling from her London flat. "They asked me if I wanted to spend all my time in Toronto and I was like, 'No! I want to check out my boys Aaron and Oliver in Montreal!' That and I'm a big MAC makeup fan, so I'm ready for a good day of shopping in the home of MAC." Ah, them's magic words to a fellow shopaholic, Storm. You can be sure we'll sort you nicely.
Last time this illustrious DJ (and former head of Metalheadz) visited the First Colony was some five years ago for a small, moderately successful party thrown by local drum & bass dons Double A & Twist called "The Joint," which took place at a sugar shack in mid-winter.
Since then, things have changed somewhat for Storm. Goldie's Metalheadz label became less of priority to him, leaving little for Storm to do in terms of running it. So after a few months of regrouping, she went to work helping some of London's other D&B boys get their shit together.
"I've definitely been keeping busy," she tells me, "between press for [Dillinja & Lemon D's label] Valve, Digital and Source Direct, and Cybertron's deal with London Records, I'm basically running around like a mad woman."
DJ Storm admits that between promotion and traveling for gigs, she's left with no time for fiddling in the studio. "But I don't really mind that. The scene is starting to get really big again. There's a proper drum & bass revival happening and for the first time in about two years we have proper bass again, so I'm really happy with my set at the moment.
"Lots of good new tunes... and I'm doing a bunch of last-minute cutting as usual, so I'll have new plates for the boys as well!"
DJ Storm spins at The Session: Absolute Drum & Bass with Jordan Dare, Double A & Twist Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Jingxi, $10
